“For Sorting Similar-Shaped Parts with Different Part Numbers, Consult NANO”
This week, we introduce
mixed-part inspection using automatic sorting machines.
Image-based inspection is not limited to
dimension or deformation checks alone.
It is also highly effective in detecting
mixed parts with different part numbers or similar sizes.
When products of different part numbers or sizes are mixed,
the larger the quantity, the more time and labor
are required for manual sorting.
In this case, we received an inquiry regarding
mixed-part sorting of O-rings.
In addition, inspections were performed for
minute irregularities on the inner and outer diameters
as well as the presence or absence of burrs.
Because O-rings are produced in large quantities and are black in color,
when sizes that differ only by millimeters are mixed,
visual sorting becomes extremely difficult.
During long hours of visual inspection,
it is nearly impossible to completely prevent oversights
caused by assumptions, optical illusions, or operator fatigue.
Regardless of whether the cause is
frequent issues within the production process
or accidental mixing during special handling or adjustments,
mixed-part problems involving similar shapes or different part numbers
place a significant burden on production sites.
NANO’s standard machines offer a processing capacity
of approximately 150 pieces per minute,
allowing inspection of about 60,000 pieces per shift.
Of course, such issues should ideally never occur.
However, in high-mix, high-volume production environments,
preventing them solely through visual inspection
is not realistically feasible.
Even if a large-lot MIX issue occurs,
please be aware that automatic sorting provides
a fast and reliable recovery solution.
