Towards Zero Defects! Bolt Crack and Fracture Detection

This week’s newsletter features a case study on crack and fracture inspection for bolts.

In mass production where keeping costs low is key, ensuring safety through full image inspection is critical.

In this case, we used a special lens to capture the bolt’s side surface and detect major cracks.
By applying backlighting and capturing silhouettes using a side-view camera,
we accurately inspected both the presence of washers and the condition of the threaded area.

The inspected product was a stainless steel bolt with spring washer (M8×16),
with a total quantity of 300,000 units.

You might be wondering,
“How could such obvious defects be missed?”
“Isn’t this something any inspector could see?”
We totally understand those concerns.

But in reality, when inspections scale to hundreds of thousands of units,
quality control becomes exponentially more difficult.

While human eyes are excellent, fatigue and familiarity can still lead to missed defects.
That’s why we believe that simple and repetitive tasks are best handled by automation.

In recent years, color camera and AI-based inspection technology has advanced significantly,
now able to detect fine scratches and subtle color irregularities.
If you’re a manufacturer or distributor dealing with mass production inspection challenges,
we’re ready to support you – even on urgent requests.

Wishing you a wonderful week!
