How AI is Transforming Visual Inspection ― Detecting Even Subtle “Gray Zones”!

Until now, visual inspection has faced several challenges:

  • Dimensional inspection is possible, but appearance inspection is difficult.

  • Reducing oversight leads to excessive false detections.

  • Determining subtle “gray zones” is extremely difficult.

Conventional image processing has only allowed a binary judgment — black or white. This inability to handle the “gray zone” has long been a major obstacle. But now, AI is changing that situation.

All it takes is capturing OK and NG images (around 20–50 OK and 50–100 NG as a guideline), marking the defective areas in a dedicated AI tool, and training the model. The training process for a single model takes only about 20–30 minutes.

What’s more, the AI function can simply be added on top of existing programs. Each camera can train its own model, and with just one switch, you can toggle the AI judgment on or off. Implementation is surprisingly simple.

As a result, detection accuracy for subtle defects such as dents, scratches, uneven coloring, or plating irregularities has significantly improved. Flexible inspection, similar to the human eye, is finally becoming a reality.
